A Country of Their Own: Writing Scotland as a Woman

***
This monograph foregrounds the works of five Scottish women authors, most of whom began contributing to the literary and cultural life of Scotland in the latter half of the 1980s. Aiming to challenge the predominantly hetero-androcentric perception of Scottish literature and culture, the book focuses on selected plays, poems, short fiction, and essays by Kathleen Jamie, Liz Lochhead, Sharman Macdonald, Rona Munro, and Agnes Owens. Each of the six analytical chapters explores the ways in which these authors have expanded the boundaries of Scotland’s literary landscape and questioned the nation’s contemporary identity. Informed by feminist and gender studies, and, where relevant, by theatre studies and ecocriticism, the book also examines representations of women’s identity at the intersection of gender, region, and class.
